In particular ciliatine can be biosynthesized from phosphonic acid. Ciliatine is also a parent compound for other transformation products including but not limited to ceramide 2-(methylamino)ethylphosphonate N-(2-phosphonoethyl)cholamide and CMP-2-aminoethylphosphonate.
